“Awakening the Giant Within” by Katie Payne

Katie PayneIn our yoga teacher training, we often ask our students to describe what makes them feel like a giant.  Please read this wonderful essay written by Katie Payne who recently graduated from Clayton Yoga Summer Teacher Training Intensive.

“Many instances in my life have allowed me to “feel like a giant”: to feel joyful, enthusiastic, caring, gentle, lovable, strong, creative, brilliant, beautiful, and passionate.  Here are just a few.

I recently had the privilege of playing Sandy in Grease the musical at my college during my last semester.  In this musical Sandy and Rizzo share a beautiful moment at the end of the musical, and nothing made me feel like a giant more than delivering the last few lines of the large solo speech.

I can remember this moment like it was yesterday. Working as a medical assistant for a dermatologist, I was gently dressing a wound of a patient with major concern. As I started comforting them, I could see their anxiety drift from their face, all to be replaced by a smile. It was in this very moment, as my boss whispered to the patient, “she’s going to be a doc.” With goosebumps of joy running through my body I knew, without a doubt, I had made the perfect career decision.

When hiking through Mark Twain forest with nothing but animals and the soft whistle of trees, nothing makes you feel more like a giant. I’ve spent countless days of my life, alone in the woods, just nature and me. To simply recount a certain memory, just this morning during my usual routine, I spotted a doe, a beautiful piece of nature standing 10 feet from me. After we shared a moment, she darted of into the woods. My heart pounding I thought to myself, nothing makes me feel more alive.

To save the best for last, I recently attended Tony Robbins’s “Unleash the Power Within” seminar in February, an experience I would not trade for the world. (It also shows how excited I was when I learned the title of the essay!). Here I learned how to be calm, center, and powerful, and that every human being has a gift the world needs, but it’s only covered up through fear. Attending this eye-opening conference I know now is just the being to my life journey of fulfillment.

Just writing this essay, I can already feel I have given myself a lot for signing up for this yoga teacher training course. I am a strong woman, however, a little guidance can help me through tough times. Especially after listening to recent conference calls, I know deep in my core that this is what I need to life a wonderful fulfilling life. I’m excited to learn and grow… and keep learning and growing until my time on this earth is complete. This early on my journey, I can’t completely describe why I am drawn to learning yoga, however, this desire is not something I need to explain. It is only something that I feel.”
