Our new yoga students have these urgent questions:
What shall I wear?
No, you don’t have to come to class in total Lululemon wear. Wear comfortable clothes that you already own – dance pants or capri pants plus a t-shirt. It helps if your clothes are close-fitting as it is easier for your instructor to check on your form and help you with corrections and modifications. The most important is that you feel comfortable wearing the clothes throughout the whole class.
What shall I bring to the first class?
- Bring your yoga mat if you have one already. If not, there are yoga mats at the studio you can use for the first few classes you take.
- A bottle of water or spa water. Follow the link to get 12 refreshing spa water recipes.
- A towel to fresh yourself up after class. Most probably you will not sweat during our Vinyasa yoga classes but having a fresh towel around will add to your well-being.
You will not need anything fancy – no fancy clothes or mats or yoga bags. When you decide to seriously pursue your yoga practice, you can go shopping for all the wonderful things available to yogis nowadays.
What shall I eat before and after class?
Yoga postures should not be done on an empty or on a full stomach. Eat a snack 1-2 hours before your class. After a heavier meal please wait 2-3 hours before practicing.
We suggest that you read these articles: snack ideas before yoga class and suggested meals after a yoga class.
Before you begin stressing out about what others might think about you and your practice during a class, please read this article to soothe your worries!
Practical tips:
Please come a few minutes early so you can let the teacher know this is your first yoga class. Also please share if you have any limitations in movement or any other health concerns. This enables your instructor to pay special attention to your needs and offer you modifications during class.
No cell phones please! It is just a major distraction to all of us.
Please wait till the class ends and don’t leave abruptly as this disturbs the flow of the yoga class. Plus you will miss the best part of class: the relaxation time.
Give yourself time! We suggest you take a few classes before you decide to pursue the yoga path or not. Plan to attend at least 5 classes or better yet give yoga 10-12 weeks so you understand all the benefits of a consistent practice.
Here is an awesome quote for you:
“He who would learn to fly one day must first learn to stand and walk and run and climb and dance; one cannot fly into flying.” – Friedrich Nietzsche

When will you come to Clayton Yoga Studio?
This is a really helpful post for newcomers. And not just new to Yoga…but sometimes even walking into a new Yoga studio can be intimidating to someone who has practiced for years! This is a great reminder about what is truly important–getting on the mat and being open to new things. I really appreciate this post.
