6 Situations That Might Disturb Your Fellow Yogis

no-68481_640There are a few things that drive even the most peaceful yogi crazy during yoga class. Especially if you are a beginner student and have limited class experience, please read about the 6 situations you need to mindful of.

Oh, you are late. Students are getting in the flow of yoga and boom…. A late arrival… you! Yes, it can happen: you get stuck in a traffic jam or get no parking and you arrive late to class. Apologizing loudly will not make the situation better, either. Please try to join the class quietly. Just find a space and get to yoga without disturbing your fellow yoga students. Arriving a few minutes early next time will guarantee a better experience for yourself, too.

Be mindful of personal space. Nobody likes “intruders”. Keep a comfortable distance between yoga mats if all possible. Some postures need more space. Turn around with your arms outstretched – if you don’t disturb your neighbor’s personal space, you will be fine during class. Please avoid stepping on somebody else’s yoga mat. That is a pet peeve for many yoga practitioners.

Silence is a golden word, especially during yoga class. It can very annoying to hear non-stop talking when you try to concentrate on a pose. The news might be outrageously juicy or important, but please share them after class. Not everybody needs to know about the latest office gossip or family news. Please be respectful of keeping a serene, stress free environment in the studio.

Thinking about secretly sending text messages or checking out the weather report during class? Please don’t. Yes, the instructor and other participants will notice…. Even if you try to hide your phone under your yoga mat!

Too much fragrance – not enough air to breathe. Did you know that there are people who are allergic to fragrances? They might suffer from headaches and nausea when smelling that particular fragrance. Even if you wear a natural fragrance like lavender, please don’t overdose. Lavender is great for stress relief, except when someone cannot tolerate it. Please remember: Less is more!

Leaving already? Feel like running out during Savasana? The last few minutes of class although not full of action are an integral part of the whole experience. Every yoga student loves to enjoy the relaxation after a great class. You trying to get out, stepping around people and yoga mats is guaranteed to ruin this experience. If you know in advance that you will need to leave before the class ends, please arrive in time and place your mat next to the door so you can leave swiftly and silently.

  1. Totally agree! Especially the sneaky cellphone users. Give yourself the time to focus just on you. You deserve it!

  2. All very good tips for people thinking of coming to a class! If you are in a small group and you think you need to leave early, never hurts to tell the instructor ahead of time so there’s no confusion. It is your practice so you will get from it what you put into it.
