Summer Yoga

the-sun-349394_640The hot summer months are here and you might be thinking: “It is just too hot to practice during the summer months. I will be back in September.” Are you ready to give up yoga for the summer? Don’t!

Three good reasons to keep up yoga this summer:

You need the energy boost yoga gives you in the summer! Heat and humidity can make you feel sluggish. Just thinking about getting in the car and drive to the studio might seem too difficult. In reality, you will walk out of the yoga class energized so it is totally worth the extra effort to get to class. You might want to take early morning or late evening classes during summer if your schedule can accommodate these times.

Don’t give up on “me” time! Especially if you have kids, your summer can get even more stressful now that the kids are out of school. Organizing activities, carpooling, managing higher expectations…. And who is at the end of all the lists you produce? You! Keep your yoga class once or twice a week sacred.

Keep up good habits! Don’t give up on your good habits even though this might be the easiest solution to manage your busy summer schedule. If you do, it might happen that by the time September comes around, it will be very difficult to get back into the habit of yoga classes. You worked hard to establish this good habit in your life, don’t let it disappear this summer!

One most important thing to remember:  Staying hydrated is important every day of the year but when it’s unbearably hot outside, it is a must! Try the many different types of yoga tees to help you well-hydrated this summer.

Have you ever tried fruit infused water? You are in for a treat! Fruit flavored water is so easy to prepare.

One version we make all the time is Strawberry-Lemon water. Clean and hull the strawberries, slice them up thinly (so you get more flavor quicker). Make sure the lemons are organic as you don’t want your water infused with chemicals used to preserve the lemons. Slice the lemon, too. Fill a water pitcher with the fruit mix, then add cold filtered water. Leave it at least for an hour or longer to get a wonderful fruit flavored water. Of course you can add ice, too to the water. In Ayurveda drinking iced drinks is not recommended so you might want to leave out the ice cubes.

  1. Wonderful information! It is easy to forget about hydration if you are practicing indoors. I definitely agree with needing the energy boost! No matter how I am feeling, I always feel energized after class.

  2. Tara Braucht says:

The strawberry lemon water sounds great! I can’t wait to try it and I never thought about how important it is to use organic lemons- especially when adding them to water because no- I don’t want to drink all those chemicals with my water!

  3. Biking to my yoga studio here in Northampton is a sweaty ordeal some days, but luckily I am a St. Louis girl who is conditioned for terribly hot and humid summers. Hopefully I am not too stinky in class. Wonder what it will be like in late July in St. Louis – we’re all going to be so tough by the end of the training!

  4. I have been fortunate to enjoy practicing outside several times this summer thanks to unusually low temps and humidity. In spite of little crawly things, the combination of doing yoga and being outdoors usually elevates my mood.

  5. I think watermelon would be great in water, too. I can’t get enough of watermelon in the summer!

  6. It’s sad that people feel guilt about “me” time, when it is so necessary for one’s wellness. An hour a week will go such a long way to mentally and physically prepare you for the challenges of your day.

  7. The tips in the last link of the Yoga Studio option make a lot of sense, and would serve as a good module for newbies preparing to teach yogea.
