Awakening My Own Giant

Amy HolborowMeet Amy Holborow, a Clayton Yoga Teacher in training this summer who writes about finding her own inner giant and how this shift has awakened in her a new life full of energy.

“Feeling like a giant in the literal sense is something I have rarely felt given that I am barely 4’11, however I can say that I have felt on top of the world many times in my life. The first time that comes to mind is when I moved away from home to go to college. The sense of independence I felt gave me this amazing feeling like I could conquer the world. Although I was proud to be going to college, I was mostly proud that I could live on my own. Another memory comes along when I recognize that finding the love of my life wasn’t something I needed, but so blessed it happened.

Later in life I was in Haridwar, India. Some women invited me into their temple to sing with them. As I sat and listened to the magical sounds of their voices in a magical language I didn’t know, I felt so much energy pulsing through the room. It was truly surreal.

As wonderful as all these memories were, the most amazing moment of my life was when my son was born. In the hospital, the doctors couldn’t find his heartbeat and I had to have an emergency C-section. I had never been so scared in my entire life. I wasn’t sure if he was going to make it. When I was holding him in my arms and he was healthy, I felt the most amazing glowing happiness and relief that I could ever imagine.

When I think of myself as a giant and only focus on the positive traits, these are the first adjectives that come to mind: compassionate, open-minded, independent, bold, a good sense of humor, adventurous, positive, dependable, good listener and energetic. I love listening to what others have to say.

I feel I am the kind of person people can be comfortable around and not feel judged. I also love to make light of things and laugh at myself. I think having a sense of humor and not taking yourself too seriously is one the most important things when it comes to true happiness. If you can’t laugh at yourself and laugh together, what else is there?

Yoga is one of the things in my life that helps me to feel freed up. I feel like it helps me to release negativity from my life and bring in positive energy. I truly believe the idea that when a door closes a window opens and I feel blessed to be in such a good place.”

My son’s birth was also a great moment in time for me. However, I felt small in comparison to the great miracle of life that was in my arms. My giant awakening did not happen until I held him and I knew that love was the answer to all that matter. The word Love became my prayer, and Lord my mantra…all this in one tiny body, called George.

Looking forward to meeting you at the training and I love your story!

  5. I love your story about singing with the women in India. Sounds so powerful and wonderful!! I can relate on a much smaller scale: chanting ‘Om’ at the start of class always gives me shivers when I hear everyone’s voice naturally fall into harmony.

  6. Wow, St. Louis was wonderfully cool in the early morning over the last ten days. It’s invigorating! But we needed to go in early to beat the midday heat and humidity.
