The Benefits of Yoga Teacher Training with Clayton Yoga are Great!
In March, 2016, Sarah Slattery, Chiropractor, graduated from Clayton Yoga Teacher Training with high honors! Enjoy reading the benefits and insights learned during her experience with Clayton Yoga Teacher Training. We wish her the best for success and great yoga time ahead! In her words…
“I am thankful that yoga has helped guide me onto a different but exciting path of new understanding. I do not expect my participants to have the same experience that I did, and again that is OKAY. If they just gain any positive experience from yoga, then I will feel like I did my job as an instructor.
One of the most valuable tools I take away from Clayton Yoga Teacher Training is breathing. Breathing is the most important part of yoga. My best advice: If a participant is not able to do any more of the poses, then just have them breathe. Scientific research is showing that mindful breathing, paying attention to your breath and learning how to manipulate it, is one of the most effective ways to lower everyday stress levels and improve a variety of health factors ranging from mood to metabolism.
There is also a direct relationship with breathing and the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system governs the body’s sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic (rest-and-restore) responses, dialing functions like heart rate, respiration, and digestion up or down as necessary in response to potential threats. With each breath, millions of sensory receptors in the respiratory system send signals via the vagus nerve to the brainstem. Fast breathing pings the brain at a higher rate, triggering it to activate the sympathetic nervous system, turning up stress hormones, heart rate, blood pressure, muscle tension, sweat production, and anxiety. On the other hand, slowing your breathing induces the parasympathetic response, dialing down all of the above as it turns up relaxation, calm, and mental clarity.
As far as Ashtanga practices, there are many benefits to doing yang yoga classes which is your typical Vinyasa flow yoga. There are many more benefits to Ashtanga yoga, but these are just a few that are most important to me. What I have noticed though, is that Ashtanga yoga has helped improve flexibility, strength, posture, improves spinal health, and betters ones bone health. Also, it can help increase blood flow and drain ones lymph and boost immunity. This is important because this helps the lymphatic system fight infection, destroy cancerous cells, and dispose of the toxic waste products of cellular functioning. Yoga poses can also help someone sleep better at night, and reduce tension in ones limbs.
I want to start by teaching yoga in nearby gyms and studios in the area, and then once I gain knowledge on how to run a business I want to open my own Chiropractic Wellness clinic that incorporates yoga and meditation. I am not sure what the future will hold with this, but I do know that it is going to be an exciting journey!” Sarah Slattery
