Yoga Teacher Training Opened Up A Whole New Life For Lisa

Lisa BrazilEnjoy reading this wonderful blogpost about why Lisa Brazil, MSW, exceptional yoga teacher, and fabulous friend, chose Clayton Yoga’s teacher training and how this training experience created and opened for Lisa, a whole new level of life.

I decided to enroll in this course as a gift for myself. This past year I have discovered what yoga can do for me and I am excited to take my knowledge to a higher level. Last December I went, somewhat reluctantly, to a friend’s yoga class who had just started teaching. I went mainly to support her new venture and I went thinking that I would just do yoga occasionally but continue to lift weights as I had in the past.  I had experienced a yoga class years ago at a community college and thought that yoga was “not my thing” since in my experience it was “just laying around”.

The classes I attended had a component of pranayama and cognitive aspect that I didn’t even realize I had been missing. I have been teaching “squared breathing” and “belly breathing” to children and adults for stress reduction but I didn’t realize the emphasis that breath has in yoga.  When my instructors would read an enlightening passage I realized “wow, this is cognitive therapy”.  Even though weight lifting and belly dancing were activities that I enjoyed; I found myself not leaving those sessions with the restored sense of peace that carried over like yoga does.

When I came across the Clayton Yoga Teacher training site it resonated more to me than other teacher training due to the instructor being a social worker herself and also an apparent emphasis on other aspects of yoga that I am interested in and not just the Asana.  I want to contribute to the field of yoga by concentrating on certain populations.

There seems to be a need for more yoga in the mental health field and less psychotropic medication. I want to continue to enlighten clients that there is so much more to mental health then just popping an antidepressant and for positive self- care a more holistic approach for mental well-being is required.

Having my RYT certification will give more credibility as I continue to coach clients along the path of body-mind awareness by encouraging yoga, meditation and mindfulness. I have found that yoga has helped me relate to the people that I work with and by taking the course I will be reinforcing and learning new coping skills for myself. As a therapist I am basically a vessel for my client’s negative energy. However once the work day is over and I pull out my mat I can feel my body and mind let go of the days toxins and absorb positive energy back through the breath and quietness of my practice.”
