The Buddha’s first teaching is that all life is difficult. His second teaching was that there was a way out. He called it compassion. In our Clayton Yoga International Teacher Trainings, we discuss several wonderful authors and speakers, one is Pema Chodren. No matter where we go or what we do, all those we love including ourselves will one day grow old, get sick and pass away.
During Clayton Yoga Teacher Training, we discuss many times in a small group setting the force of compassion as it works it’s wonders and magic into all of our different lives. With the regular practice of yoga, we remain peaceful, vigilant and positive. A 30 year old Buddhist nun named Pema Chodren describes in this beautiful video, why we escalate violence, aggression, to ourselves and to others. Change. When we meditate and face this moment directly, change becomes an ally not the enemy! We can even in stormy seas remain at peace.
“Life is glorious, but life is also wretched. It is both. Appreciating the gloriousness inspires us, encourages us, cheers us up, gives us a bigger perspective, energizes us. The gloriousness becomes tinged by craving and addiction. On the other hand, wretchedness–life’s painful aspect–softens us up considerably. Knowing pain is a very important ingredient of being there for another person. The wretchedness humbles us and softens us, but if we were only wretched, we would all just go down the tubes. Gloriousness and wretchedness need each other. One inspires us, the other softens us. They go together.” Pema Chodren

Over the last 6 months meditation has changed my life dramatically. I notice a complete difference in my day when I take time to close my eyes, notice my breath, and let go.
